Periscope cites one reason behind its decision to shut its doors is due to an “unsustainable maintenance-mode” state, which it says has been happening for some time. Moving on and come March 2021, Periscope will officially be removed from both Google Play and Apple’s App store, while the creation of new accounts will be disabled with the next app update. As for the app’s functions, the app’s blog post says that Broadcasts shared on Twitter prior will live on as replays, and all broadcasters will be able to download all their broadcasts and date before its removal on March 2021. Additionally, the app’s developer have also laid out instructions on how they can go live on Twitter after Periscope’s removal. First launched in 2015, Periscope was acquired by Twitter even before its public launch for an undisclosed sum. As mentioned, the app serves the social media platform as its de facto video streaming function, thus giving Twitter users another option beyond the more traditional typed message.
