A jury of US federal court in San Diego found Apple guilty of infringing on three of Qualcomm’s patents. As a result, the former owes the latter US$31 million (~RM126.85 million). This values the three patents at US$1.41 (~RM5.77) per iPhone.
It is not known at the moment whether Apple will appeal the decision or otherwise. Nevertheless, the latest decision is yet another interesting addition to the multiple legal battles between the two big names in tech which have carried on for the past few years although they just getting warmed up though. Apple previously has argued that Qualcomm’s practice of getting a cut from the selling price of a device in exchange for patent licenses while still getting paid for its chips is rather unfair and illegal. Qualcomm then stated that there was nothing wrong with its business model. This ultimately resulted in a high-profile court case that is going to place next month with billions of dollars are likely to be at stake. (Source: Reuters)
